I want to 'disable' a tag.
I use tags for projects but once the project is over, I would like to 'diable' the tag so it's no longer suggested when tagging new items but is still available for searching and filtering.

I would love to have this functionality. I have many projects that are annual things. I'd like to disable tags for inactive projects so that I don't see them in suggestions, but can still search for them. I suppose a valid alternative would be to allow "tag" searching to treat categories as tags too. Then at least I can delete and recreate tags as needed, but leave the categories behind.
