Tips: Taglocity and Windows Desktop Search

Taglocity Beta 2 uses Microsoft's Windows Desktop Search (WDS) to underpin the 'Tag Search' feature.

This was done because;

(a) these search utilities work pretty well and are popular, so it seemed silly to reinvent the wheel.

(b) Any lucene based search hash we did in Taglocity would only take more disk/cpu.

(c) Taglocity can use the API's to make 'Tag Specific' queries, rather than just a general 'keyword search' on your entire desktop.

Taglocity Beta 2 only works with WDS 2.5. This is the one you get when you download from here:

http://toolbar.msn.com/

The next version from Microsoft (Enterprise WDS v2.6) does not fully work with Taglocity Beta 2 - as in, it completes the search just fine, but when you go to double-click and open up a result line it does not work.

The plan past this Beta is to detect which Desktop Search Engine you have and then use that. If you don't one then it will show you some URL's to download one from.

The candidates for 3rd Party Desktop Search utilities for the next drop are:

(1) WDS 2.5 (The MSN Toolbar one)
(2) WDS 2.6 (The standalone one)
(3) Google Desktop Search (v2 and up)

We'd welcome any comments on other engines you'd like to see used by Taglocity.

Right or wrong, I am using the WDS, so would vote for the WDS versions first.
